Welsh family celebrates 50th anniversary of Dairy Queen

Thursday, March 9, will mark the 50th year the Homewood Dairy Queen opens under the ownership of the Welsh family.

Homewood and Flossmoor residents are expected to flock to the store at Ridge Road and Gladville Avenue, despite the colder temperatures. It’s the tradition that counts, and the Welsh family has been doing a great job of satisfying the community’s urges for those Dilly Bars, Blizzards and special treats.

Children’s author Tracy Watland shares messages of kindness

Homewood author Tracy Watland has written a delightful children’s book designed to share what she calls “the power of positivity.” Watland shared her story in February at the Family Reading Night for District 153’s Willow School students and parents. The book is available at Loulou Belle’s in Homewood or through Amazon books.

Armed man robs Homewood TCF bank branch

Law enforcement agencies are looking for a man who robbed the TCF Bank in Homewood on Tuesday afternoon. According to BanditTrackerChicago.com, the man entered the bank, at 17830 Halsted St., and displayed a weapon. The robbery took place at 2:27 p.m.

H-F Park District candidates focus on programs, facilities

The focus at the Homewood-Flossmoor Park District candidate forum Monday night was on programs and facilities.
 
Each of the candidates present at the forum emphasized what they could bring to the commissioner’s position. None of the candidates found fault with how the district is operating.
 

A change in Homewood's landscape as old Ridge Road building comes down

Buildings come and go, and as they do, our landscape changes. The 1700 block of Ridge Road changed this past week as two long-standing buildings were razed.

Dental office expansion includes former Governors Highway bank site

The Center for Dental Excellence is planning a major expansion of its offices in Flossmoor’s “triangle” area, near the junction of Kedzie Avenue and Governors Highway.

At the March 6 meeting, Flossmoor village board members unanimously voted in favor of a package allowing the consolidation and redevelopment of parcels at 19615 and 19601 Governors Highway.

Thousands attended Homewood’s 2016 events, commission reports

If you live in Homewood, or are a visitor, you know one thing for sure: There is never a dull moment in Home Sweet Homewood, thanks to the village’s Community Relations Commission.

In its annual report, presented at the Feb. 28 village board meeting, the commission reported that it had produced 10 major events throughout 2016 and co-sponsored two events.

Local elections are about a month away. Once again we will be asked to choose elected officials who will make decisions in our villages, schools and park district. We care deeply about the future, and making sure we prepare our children for whatever challenges lie ahead. And, presumably, one of the best ways to do that is to make sure that the right people are in charge of those local governments that have the biggest effect on our day-to-day lives.

But will we all show up at the polls to help select our leaders?
