Remember December 2018

Our cover feature in December is the annual Holiday Guide, which features an extensive calendar of holiday season events and activities.

The main story this year, by Danielle-Maya Banks, recognized sorority Delta Sigma Theta for its fundraising efforts that help make the holidays brighter for children in need.

David Funk reported on Homewood's efforts to explore new options for obtaining water. The village has sparred with the city of Harvey, the current provider of water, and officials have been concerned about the stability of Harvey's infrastructure and the possibility that the city's financial woes might lead to rate increases.

Tom Houlihan reported on the results of the November referendum on Flossmoor's restrictions for parking pickup trucks in the village. Voters overwhelmingly approved easing those restrictions.

Tom's column responded to the release of school report cards, which labeled all but one local school as "commendable." He noted that the prevalence of standardized testing has a three-decade history with uncertain results.

Eric Crump's column reported on a couple of local youngsters, Ethan and Austin Gosselin, who had their mom take them to see Mayor Richard Hofeld so they could put forward the idea that kids in the area could use some new entertainment options. Hofeld said he was impressed with their initiative.
