Hutchinson teaming with assessor on reforms to property tax system

With property tax bills continuing to climb, Sen. Toi Hutchinson (D-Chicago Heights) is working with newly elected Cook County Assessor Fritz Kaegi on a set of reforms to Illinois’ antiquated property tax system.

Three changes to property tax exemptions approved by the Illinois legislature

A bill that would increase Homeowner Exemption and Senior Citizen and Senior Freeze Exemption tax relief measures is nearing the finish line to get Gov. Bruce Rauner’s signature.

The measure, SB473, started in the Illinois Senate with co-sponsor Sen. Toi Hutchinson (D-Olympia Fields). It passed 54-0 on May 4 and was sent to the Illinois House.

Assessor’s Office recovers $15.6 million in erroneous tax exemptions

The Cook County Assessor’s Office has recovered more than $15.6 million after investigating erroneous tax exemptions as part of the Erroneous Homestead Exemption Program.

In addition to the money already collected, the assessor’s office is pursuing more than $13 million billed, including more than $2 million in liens collected at 1.5 percent interest per month. The office also expected more than $10 million in erroneous exemptions revenue in fiscal year 2016.

Senior property tax exemption extended to Feb. 11

The Cook County Assessor’s Office has extended the deadline another week to Thursday, Feb. 11, for filing applications for the Senior and Senior Freeze Exemption.

The exemption is for property taxes for 2015. All exemption savings will appear on the second installment of property tax bills coming out in summer.

Nearly 300,000 applications were mailed in January to seniors who received exemptions last year.
