Local school districts will work to meet Gov. Pritzker's vaccine and mask mandates (free content)

Officials in Homewood District 153, Flossmoor District 161 and Homewood-Flossmoor High School will be working to meet Gov. J.B. Pritzker's directive announced on Thursday, Aug. 26, that K-12 teachers and staff will be required to get vaccinated against COVID-19 or get tested weekly. He also issued an expanded mask mandate, now requiring everyone to wear a mask indoors, regardless of vaccination status.

D161 continues to refine complex reopening plan

Flossmoor District 161 board members continued to help the administration refine the plan to reopen schools this fall and heard good news about a number of summer construction projects at the July 20 meeting.

Superintendent Dana Smith said parents and board members have been instrumental in helping to think through the complexities of starting a semester during a pandemic. 

Parker principal resigns, replacement named

The Flossmoor School Board approved the resignation of Parker Junior High Principal Fred Hunter and named Amabel Crawford as his replacement Monday during a special board meeting, according to a District 161 press release.

Hunter’s resignation will go into effect June 30, and Crawford will take on the role beginning July 1, according to board documents. Crawford is the district’s current director of learning and instruction.

Mardell Parker, former District 161 superintendent, dies

Mardell Morris Parker, for whom Parker Junior High in Flossmoor is named, died Sunday, March 17, in Tierra Verde, Florida. He was 93.  “My dad was guided throughout his life by his strong belief in doing the ‘right thing,’ by his tremendous sense of duty to his family, his community and to the children of his school district,” his daughter Sally Parker-Johnson said.

District 161 moves toward hiring private security at Parker

Flossmoor District 161 took a step Monday toward hiring a private firm to provide security at Parker Junior High School this fall. The board held a public hearing on the subject and also recognized Parker Junior High School students who were selected to participate in an internship sponsored by the Homewood Science Center and Izaak Walton Nature Preserve.
