Neighborhood volunteers cheer on runners during Hidden Gem Half Marathon

The prevailing sentiment following the first Hidden Gem Half Marathon in Flossmoor was enthusiastic appreciation.

The runners said they loved it.

The villagers said they loved it.

The organizers were ecstatic.

Even the atmosphere saw fit to bless the event with perfect conditions, just shy of 60 degrees at race time under a blue sky dappled with light clouds. By the end of the race, the temperatures reached the mid-70s and the sun continued to shine out of a brilliant blue sky.

Local runners club eager to compete in Hidden Gem

When organizers announced the Hidden Gem Half Marathon in Flossmoor, local runners leaped at the chance. Kaila Konecki, a regular runner with the HF Community Running Club, said she was excited when she heard the news.

“I was actually like the fifth person to register. I was all over it,” she said.

Flossmoor’s ‘hidden gems’ given chance to shine for Sept. 7 race

Flossmoor will have a number of “hidden gems” to show off on Saturday, Sept. 7, when more than 650 people from 14 states are expected to arrive for the inaugural Hidden Gem Half Marathon.

Tom Dobrez, one of the lead organizers of the Hidden Gem Half Marathon, ticks off a list of the “hidden gems” of Flossmoor that the race is designed to reveal to the runners and spectators but notes that the most important gem is the villagers who will come out to make the event work.
