Mardi Gras fundraiser to help District 161 STEM, arts

The District 161 PTO is sponsoring a Mardi Gras fundraiser, 6 to 9 p.m. Feb. 15 at Grape & Grain Co., 18031 Dixie Highway in Homewood. Ticket prices are $25 in advance and $35 at the door. The event is solely for persons 21 and older. Proceeds will help fund programs in the arts and STEM subjects – science, technology, engineering and mathematics.

District 161 board rejects computer purchase for PARCC testing

Board of Education members in Flossmoor School District 161 Monday rejected an emergency administration request for new computers to be used during the state-mandated PARCC standardized test, which students will begin taking later this month.

District 161 board to revisit safety policy after assault incident

A Parker Junior High School mother described Monday how her 12-year-old daughter was assaulted at the school last month, then sent home on her own recognizance.

After that, she said, the girl showed signs of a head injury. She was examined by an orthodontist, who found damage, and was admitted to a hospital.

Drop in assessed valuation throws shadow over District 161 tax levy approval

Faced with falling property values, Flossmoor School District 161 Board of Education members created some financial wiggle room Monday by approving a $25.2 million tax levy that is likely to be cut by Cook County officials.

District 161 Business Manager Frances LaBella said she expects the county to reduce the school system’s final levy amount to about $21.9 million. District officials believe that amount should cover local education needs during the next fiscal year.
