District 161 teacher is finalist for Golden Apple award

Janet Burke, a third grade teacher at Serena Hills School, will be honored Saturday as a finalist for the 2015 Golden Apple Awards for Excellence in Teaching. Burke is one of 30 Golden Apple finalists from throughout the Chicago area. 

Survey, community forum focus on District 161 bus realignment

Flossmoor School District 161 is seeking community input on a plan to cut the number of bus routes for elementary students, a move that could reduce the transportation budget by as much as $270,000. Superintendent Craig Doster sent a letter to community members last week informing them of the proposed bus route realignment.

PARCC off to good start in District 161, superintendent says

Students in Flossmoor School District 161 will start the 2015-16 academic year on Aug. 21, a Friday. The school calendar, approved Monday by Board of Education members, extends through June 3, also a Friday.

Mardi Gras fundraiser to help District 161 STEM, arts

The District 161 PTO is sponsoring a Mardi Gras fundraiser, 6 to 9 p.m. Feb. 15 at Grape & Grain Co., 18031 Dixie Highway in Homewood. Ticket prices are $25 in advance and $35 at the door. The event is solely for persons 21 and older. Proceeds will help fund programs in the arts and STEM subjects – science, technology, engineering and mathematics.
