Homewood man to have kidney transplant thanks to running buddy

On Jan. 9, 2017, Mike Blake of New Lenox was being tested to see if he might be a candidate for donating one of his kidneys to his running buddy, Richard Matula of Homewood. On Jan. 9, 2018, Blake and Matula will enter the hospital and by the end of the day, Blake will be down one kidney and Matula will receive the transplant he needs to deal with his body’s dwindling kidney function due to a heredity disease.

Rabid bat found in downtown Homewood

A rabid bat was found in downtown Homewood on Aug. 23, according to an alert posted by Donna Alexander, administrator of Cook County Animal and Rabies Control.

The bat, found in the 1900 block of Ridge Road, was determined to be rabid by the Illinois State Public Health Laboratory,  she said.

Cancer Support Center sets annual golf outing for Aug. 14

The Cancer Support Center is hosting its 26th Annual Golf Outing on Monday, Aug. 14, at Flossmoor Country Club. After golf, two outstanding supporters Anthony Panici and Rich Merlo will be honored with a special humanitarian award.
 

Local volunteers seek support for Alzheimer's disease research Friday and Saturday

A group of local residents will be seeking support this weekend to further the fight against Alzheimer's disease. 

Led by Al and June Fidanza of Homewood, about 20 volunteers will be accepting donations from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Friday, June 9, and Saturday, June 10, at Walt's Food Center, 2345 183rd St. They also plan to have volunteers at the Homewood Farmers Market on Martin Avenue Square on Saturday. The market is open from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Ingalls Receives national achievement award from the American College of Surgeons’ Commission on Cancer

Ingalls Memorial Hospital recently was presented with the 2015 Outstanding Achievement Award by the Commission on Cancer of the American College of Surgeons.

Ingalls is one of a group of 50 U.S. health care facilities with accredited cancer programs to receive this national honor for surveys performed in 2015. The award acknowledges cancer programs that achieve excellence in providing quality care to cancer patients.

Ingalls to host diabetes forum Feb. 29 with focus on wound care

The next meeting of the Ingalls Diabetes Forum is 6 to 7 p.m. Monday, Feb. 29, and will feature general surgeon and wound care specialist Dr. Michael Romberg, who will discuss diabetic wounds and how to care for them.

Romberg is a board certified general surgeon whose specialties include wound care and cancer surgeries.

The meeting will take place in the first-floor conference room at Ingalls Family Care Center, 19550 Governors Highway in Flossmoor.
