H-F staff plans for graduation and special senior event

Homewood-Flossmoor High School will have a graduation and an event for seniors, but COVID-19 regulations mean neither will look like the traditional events of past years.

When members of the senior class petitioned in February for a graduation ceremony and something that would resemble the prom, administrators said they were working on plans. 

Nothing is final, Principal Jerry Anderson said during the school board’s Planning Committee meeting Thursday, March 18.

Representatives of the Homewood-Flossmoor High School Class of 2021 want their last months of high school to feel “normal” with a prom and graduation. They petitioned the administration and school board for responses to four actions they say will have a direct impact on their last months at H-F. 

“We are a group of seniors who feel strongly that our voices deserve to be heard regarding decisions that are impacting our senior year,” the petition reads. 

H-F studies plan for January in-person learning

The return date for students and staff at H-F High School is unknown, but administrators and teachers continue to study possible plans.

At the Nov. 17 school board meeting, Principal Jerry Anderson said, “The goal is to transition to hybrid learning during the second semester.” Depending on COVID-19 numbers and safety protocols, students could return to campus Jan. 25 or Feb. 1. Students also will have the option of continuing on the e-learning program.

H-F athletes get shorten schedules due to pandemic

Matthew Lyke, athletic director at Homewood-Flossmoor High School, intends on giving H-F student athletes “memorable experiences” despite shortened schedules and COVID-19 precautions.

“The kids may not have the same amount of contests, and tournaments and invitationals like they used to, but we are still providing competitive, memorable moments for these kids throughout their season,” he said. 

H-F volunteers move forward to host annual Operation Snowball event

Activities at Homewood-Flossmoor High School haven’t stopped – they’ve just gone virtual. Registration ends this week for the annual Operation Snowball event, a program H-F has run for nearly 40 years.

Operation Snowball is an international alcohol, tobacco and other drug-use prevention program that focuses on leadership development to help empower students to lead drug-free lives.
