Marian Catholic to celebrate homecoming along with school’s 60th anniversary

Marian Catholic High School is celebrating its homecoming this week. Various events and activities will take place at the school during this celebration.

As a reflection of the school’s 60th anniversary, the theme for this year’s Homecoming celebration is “Homecoming Rewind – Dancing through the Decades.” 

Sister Mary Jo becomes internet sensation after throwing first pitch

Sister Mary Jo Sobieck, a nun of the Dominican Order of Springfield, who was bestowed the honor of throwing out a ceremonial first pitch in celebration of Marian Catholic High School’s 60th anniversary threw a strike — and went viral on social media.

Marian Catholic supporters get a chance to walk Sox field

The Chicago White Sox will host the Marian Catholic High School Marching Band for a performance before the 6:10 p.m. game Aug. 18 against the Kansas City Royals. The Marian band, a seven-time Bands of America Grand National Champion and Class 3A state champion, will march into Guaranteed Rate Field with a parade of supporters marching behind them. 

Flossmoor resident honored as tennis co-captain

Kyle Scheffers of Flossmoor won numerous honors as co-captain of the Trinity College in Hartford, Connecticut, during his senior year.
 
An alumnus of Marian Catholic High School, Scheffers graduated from Trinity in May with a degree in economics. He is the son of Cathy and Todd Scheffers.
 

Local students make Marian High honor roll

Thirty-nine students from Homewood and Flossmoor made the fourth quarter honor roll at Marian Catholic High School in Chicago Heights.

Flossmoor students inducted into Marian Catholic National Honor Society

Four Flossmoor students were among 88 juniors and seniors recently inducted into the Marian Catholic High School National Honor Society. 

Calyn Brumley, Riley Driscoll, Erin Kelly and Jacob Klupchak were inducted during a ceremony on Thursday, May 10. 

‘Hairspray’ staged April 20, 21, 22 at Marian Catholic High

When Marian Catholic High School stages the musical “Hairspray” this weekend it will be senior Steven Babick’s final performance. Steven, of Homewood, will be joined on stage by sophomore Fiona Keating and freshman Taylor Trojan, both of Flossmoor, for the 7 p.m. shows Friday and Saturday, April 20 and 21, and 2 p.m. Sunday, April 22.

The rise of fencing

Forget Zorro. He wasn’t a fencer. The masked man’s swashbuckling movie scenes that capture the clatter from dueling rapiers as opponents fight on isn’t what today’s fencing is about. Today’s fencing requires one-on-one strategy, physical agility and intensity and it’s drawing the attention of students at Homewood-Flossmoor and Marian Catholic High Schools. Nationwide, interest in high school fencing has been on a steady rise the past four decades, according to the National Fencing Club.

Marian Catholic High School to host open house, education financing event

Marian Catholic High School will host an open house from 1 to 4 p.m. on Sunday, Nov. 19.
 
The event is geared toward prospective seventh and eighth grade students and parents that are considering sending their children to Marian. 

The school, at 700 Ashland Ave. in Chicago Heights, is a Catholic coeducational college preparatory high school within the Dominican tradition of study, prayer, community and preaching.
