New assistant principal appointed at Parker Junior High School

Parker Junior High School is starting the 2016-17 academic year with a new assistant principal. Shemeka Fountain, a 16-year veteran of junior high schools in Dolton and South Holland, began her assignment at Parker on Wednesday.

School officials are proposing an end to the ban on “unnaturally colored hair,” Parker Principal David Kennedy said at Monday’s Flossmoor District 161 school board committee meeting.

Data shows improvements with Parker’s discipline program, principal says

Parker Junior High School Principal David Kennedy made a presentation to the Flossmoor District 161 school board this week showing that the number of disciplinary referrals declined in the first year of a new program.

During the current school year, there were 43 referrals for fighting, Kennedy said. There were 77 referrals for disrespect, 57 for abusive language and one for the use of tobacco, drugs, weapons and combustibles. The numbers show the total referrals through Monday.

District 161 to pay H-F teacher so three students can take advanced math class

Three Parker Junior High School students – a sixth grader and two eighth graders – will be taking junior-level honors math courses at Homewood-Flossmoor High School in the coming academic year.

Flossmoor School District 161 Board of Education members Monday approved $11,414 to cover the cost of one H-F math teacher for one class so that the three students can take algebra II and trigonometry at the high school.

Tech Ninjas win award for ‘explosive strike’

Parker Junior High Tech Ninjas won the Judges Control Award recently at the Chicago Math and Science Academy FIRST Tech Challenge qualifier. It was the team’s second time competing in FTC, an international program that brings science, problem solving and programming to the middle school and high school students

Students from Parker Junior High School recently successfully competed in a robotic competition, placing eleventh out of 27 teams, most of them made up of Chicago-area high school students

Parker girls basketball team takes undefeated record to state tournament

The eighth grade Lady Falcons basketball team from Parker Junior High School in Flossmoor is headed to the Illinois Elementary School Association state tournament.

Under the leadership of Coach Darryl Thompson and Assistant Coach Kaleena Kessling, the girls have blazed their way to an undefeated season with a record of 18-0. The Lady Falcons advanced to the state quarterfinals after their sectional win on Wednesday.
