Letter: Country club redevelopment project an example of environmental racism

Environmental racism is a problem across the country, but the Southland of Chicago is facing its devastating consequences. When zoomed in on the demographics of Cook County, according to the Statistical Atlas, it is clear that the majority of people of color live within the Chicago’s South and West sides and the South Suburbs. The further north you go, the whiter it gets. 

Hazel Crest opposes Calumet Country Club redevelopment plan

The village of Hazel Crest issued a statement Tuesday night strongly opposing the proposed redevelopment of the former Calumet Country Club into a trucking distribution center and Homewood's settlement agreement with developer Diversified Partners.

After a special meeting of the board of trustees, Hazel Crest Mayor Vernard Alsberry Jr. released a video version of the statement. 

Homewood Planning and Zoning Commission to consider request to rezone Calumet Country Club property

The Homewood Planning and Zoning Commission will meet at 7 p.m. Thursday to consider rezoning the former Calumet Country Club property to enable industrial use on the land, which has been a golf course since 1917.

If approved, the rezoning request by W&E Ventures LLC would rezone the property at 2150 175th Street from PL-2, public land and open space, to M-1, limited manufacturing use.

Redevelopment closer for Triumph Building site in Homewood

Homewood trustees will consider a measure Tuesday to seek additional bidders on a project to redevelop the site on the southwest corner of Ridge Road and Martin Avenue. The building at 2033 Ridge Road, commonly referred to as the Triumph Building, was purchased last year by the village for the purpose of finding a developer to construct a mixed-use building there.

 

Land bank authority eyes redevelopment of three Homewood buildings

Homewood Village Board members approved an intergovernmental agreement with the South Suburban Land Bank Development Authority at their Jan. 23 meeting, setting in motion a process to redevelop three vacant properties. The board also approved variances for Freddy's Frozen Custard, which plans to open a restaurant on Halsted Street later this year.
