Hutchinson supports $2.2 million increase in local school funding

Sen. Toi Hutchinson (D-Olympia Fields) said an increase for schools passed by the Illinois Legislature and signed by Gov. Bruce Rauner Thursday will bring an estimated $2.23 million to schools in Homewood and Flossmoor.

Hutchinson’s district includes parts of Flossmoor. She was a co-sponsor of Senate Bill 2047 that funds these increases.

The Illinois Legislature’s failure to fund schools will “ruin” Homewood District 153’s financial structure, according to Superintendent Dale Mitchell.

The failure of state government to adopt a budget and establish a school financial plan will further erode District 153 financial health. The inability of the legislature to act also means District 153 loses federal money for textbooks and special education, Mitchell wrote in a district newsletter.

Homewood school board considering enrollment shifts, dissolving Millennium School

The Homewood District 153 school board is considering shifting fifth graders to Churchill School as a cost-cutting move. Parents were notified of the proposal Friday as administrators and school board members look at ways to save money in light of decreasing state support. Shifting students could save as much as $600,000 per year.
