Homewood police investigate shooting death at local rehab center

A 77-year-old resident of South Surburban Rehabilitation Center died Saturday after suffering a gunshot wound, according to Homewood police.

Officers responded to a report of shots fired at the facility at 19000 S. Halsted St. shortly after 3 a.m. and learned that a resident had been wounded. The resident was transported to an area hospital but died shortly afterward.

The name of the victim is being withheld pending notification of the family.

1 injured Saturday in shooting at Speedway

One man was injured in a shooting Saturday night at the Speedway gas station, 18002 Halsted St., according to Homewood police.

The 52-year-old male victim suffered non-life-threatening injuries and was transported to an area hospital by ambulance, police said.

The incident occurred about 8:50 p.m. The gunfire came from a white vehicle that then traveled south on Halsted Street. 

A vehicle parked at Chevrolet of Homewood on the east side of Halsted was damaged.

Teen facing multiple charges after shots are fired on Flossmoor street

A Flossmoor teenager was charged with three weapons-related felonies less than 24 hours after shots were fired at an intersection in the village, police said.
The 17-year-old male was arrested at his home at 1:20 p.m. on Sept. 29, and is in custody as a juvenile in the Cook County court system, Flossmoor Deputy Chief Tod Kamleiter said Monday.

Murder charge filed in H-F student's death

Homewood police announced Tuesday that a 19-year-old Chicago Heights man has been charged with first degree murder in connection with the shooting death Saturday, Sept. 1, of Romane D. Taylor Jr.

Johnny Johnson, of the 100 block of Sue Street, was slated to appear in bond court Tuesday. He did not shoot Taylor, according to the police description of the incident, but was involved in an attempted armed robbery during which Taylor was killed.

Teen dies from gunshot injuries

A teen shot on Loomis Avenue in Homewood on Saturday has died from his injuries, according to police.

The 17-year-old victim was shot early Saturday afternoon. Police responded at 1:42 p.m. to reports of shots fired in the 19100 block of Loomis.

Based on information gathered, there is no imminent danger to the community from this incident, a police spokeswoman said.

Guilty plea in Flossmoor downtown shooting ends case against man

Nearly two years after a shooting in downtown Flossmoor electrified the community, an Indiana man has pleaded guilty to a hate crime and reckless discharge of a firearm, both felonies.
Bryan Oedzes made the guilty plea Thursday in the Markham courthouse, said Tandra Simonton, a spokeswoman for the Cook County State’s Attorney’s office.

Homewood couple say they tried to stop fight, shooting

A Homewood couple say they tried to stop a fight that resulted in two people being shot outside Walmart, 17550 S. Halsted Ave., shortly after 8 p.m. on Sunday, June 24. 

Cara Lawlor told the Chronicle on Monday she dove on top of a man being kicked in the head and her fiance, John Pangborn, helped a security guard wrestle a gun from another man.
