May 19 tribute, book honor former Western Avenue School principal

A longtime principal at Western Avenue School in Flossmoor, Jack Henneberry, will be honored at a May 19 event marking the publication of a book that’s filled with his words of inspiration that he shared with his staff and the school community over the years. The event, which is free and open to the public, will take place Saturday from 1:30 to 4:30 p.m. at the Flossmoor Community House, 847 Hutchison Road in Flossmoor.

District 161 names new principal at Western Avenue School

Less than a month after the principal at Western Avenue School resigned, Flossmoor District 161 has found a replacement.

Lisa Dallacqua was unanimously appointed to the post at Monday’s board of education meeting.

Western Avenue Principal Prosen headed for Oak Brook school

Western Avenue School Principal Chad Prosen resigned this week. He will become the new principal at Brook Forest School in Butler District 53 in Oak Brook beginning with the 2017-18 school year. The District 53 school board approved Prosen’s hiring on May 8.

Girl Scouts donate cookie money for a Buddy Bench

No one should be without a friend, especially on a playground where kids play games and challenge each other on who can climb and swing the highest or run the furthest. And if you do sit out, you shouldn’t be alone. Sit with a buddy. Girl Scouts collaborated recently to put a Buddy Bench at Western Avenue School to serve as a place for buddies to sit.

Flossmoor prohibits parking on street near Western Avenue School

Parking will be not be allowed on a street near Western Avenue School that has turned into a traffic bottleneck, especially during student drop-off and pick-up schedules. Flossmoor Village Board members Monday unanimously voted to completely remove on-street parking from Vardon Lane between Western Avenue and Gardner Road.

Flossmoor moms, coffee-blended brew help fund education in Uganda

Michelle Nelson and Janna Henry received their introductory beer-making lesson last month from Flossmoor Station brewmaster Eymard Freire. They helped mix the regular beer ingredients, along with coffee beans from Uganda, in an effort to raise funds for educational programs in that East African nation.

As school starts, there's still time for planting at Western Avenue garden

Students returning to Western Avenue School this week will be faced with an important question that has little to do with reading, writing or arithmetic. What would grow best in a vacant planting bed at the school garden?
