School districts searching near and far for top candidates

Finding good teachers is becoming more difficult. Districts 153, 161 and 233 are all willing to go outside of Illinois and the Midwest on candidate searches. The districts participated in a schools job fair March 16 that drew 29 districts from South Cook and Will counties who are looking for staff.

Parker principal resigns, replacement named

The Flossmoor School Board approved the resignation of Parker Junior High Principal Fred Hunter and named Amabel Crawford as his replacement Monday during a special board meeting, according to a District 161 press release.

Hunter’s resignation will go into effect June 30, and Crawford will take on the role beginning July 1, according to board documents. Crawford is the district’s current director of learning and instruction.

Mardell Parker, former District 161 superintendent, dies

Mardell Morris Parker, for whom Parker Junior High in Flossmoor is named, died Sunday, March 17, in Tierra Verde, Florida. He was 93.  “My dad was guided throughout his life by his strong belief in doing the ‘right thing,’ by his tremendous sense of duty to his family, his community and to the children of his school district,” his daughter Sally Parker-Johnson said.

Homewood marketing to millennial home buyers

Homewood is asking millennial home buyers to “Think Homewood” in a marketing campaign that will begin again later this month. The campaign will center on a series of animated ads designed to look like puzzle pieces coming together over slogans exalting the benefits of moving to Homewood. The ads will be shareable over social media.

Customers sad to see Panera closing

The usual vibe at the Panera Bread in Cherry Creek Plaza was missing Sunday as staff counted down the hours before the store closed at 4 p.m.
 
“I’ve been coming here every day the last four or five years. I think it’s terrible,” said Martin McHale of Homewood who sat by the fireplace reading a newspaper. “They said they talked to the mayor and they weren’t going to close here. I really hate to see it close.”
 

Irish tenor sings St. Patrick’s Day favorites

Gavin Coyle, a noted Irish tenor, will be giving a belated St. Patrick’s Day concert of Celtic songs and Irish ballads at 7 p.m. Thursday, March 21, at St. Joseph Church, 17951 Dixie Highway in Homewood.
