Late in June, Illinois Gov. J.B. Pritzker signed into law a bill that will allow adults to buy recreational marijuana beginning the first day of 2020. Realistically, that doesn’t mean you’ll be able to walk into a cannabis dispensary on Jan. 1 and walk out with a bag of buds.

Homewood residents offer ideas, urge village to fight redevelopment project

From the perspective of Homewood officials and residents at a special board of trustees meeting Thursday, July 18, the proposed redevelopment of Calumet Country Club appears to be a doubly bad deal: a big loss and a bad gain.

The loss would be a historic country club and nearly 130 acres of open land. The gain would be a fulfillment center, but it comes with a significant increase in truck traffic.

New police, fire, public works vehicles for Homewood

The police, fire and public works departments will be getting new trucks in Homewood after the board approved leases at its July 23 meeting. Public works will replace its engineering division’s 2008 Ford Explorer and street division’s 2006 plow truck, also through a separate purchasing cooperative. 
 

Calumet Country Club disconnect petition prompts Homewood officials to act

A redevelopment plan for the historic Calumet Country Club on Homewood's north side has village officials and residents alarmed.

The current proposal by Diversified Partners CRE, which has a contract to purchase the golf course at 2136 175th St., would redevelop the property as a transportation and distribution center that could have more than 300 trucks per day going in and out, according to Homewood officials.

'Hate' forum promotes thoughtful conversation for H-F residents

Local residents filled Flossmoor’s Village Hall on July 16, when the Anti-Defamation League hosted "The State of Hate," an event to discuss national trends in hate speech, and examine the local impact. 
 

Great day for a hot dog!

The Homewood-Flossmoor Park District cooked more than 850 hot dogs for its 12th National Hot Dog Day picnic Tuesday, July 23, in Irwin Park in Homewood.
 

Forever Yogurt celebrates five years of serving frozen treats in Homewood

This month marks five years for the Forever Yogurt self-serve frozen yogurt shop located in the Cherry Creek Shopping Center in Homewood. Josette Fourte of Homewood, who owns the franchise with her husband, Kevin, admits that she’s not a fan of traditional yogurt.

Champagne, gin, liqueur, Thai tea and several special ingredients came together in a beautiful blend that won LaVoute Bistro the winning prize at the Homewood Science Center’s second annual Cocktail Chemistry Challenge on July 18. 
 

Public hearing for new TIF district in Homewood set for Tuesday

The Village of Homewood will host a public hearing at 7 p.m. Tuesday to provide information and invite comment about a proposed tax increment finance district on the site of the former Bogart's Charhouse. The hearing will include a report from the Joint Review Board, which includes representative from other taxing bodies that would be affected by the TIF district; an overview of the TIF plan; and time for public comment.
