Homewood library board selects new executive director

A three-time Blue Island Woman of the Year winner has been hired as the new executive director of Homewood Public Library. On May 15, the library board of trustees selected Colleen Waltman to fill the position. Waltman comes to Homewood from her job as director of Blue Island Public Library, where she has worked since 2014.

 

IHSA inducts local ref into basketball hall of fame

For more than 30 years, John Messaglia’s side job as a referee had him calling personal fouls, three-second violations and double dribbles at basketball games. The Illinois High School Association recently inducted Messaglia inducted into the Illinois Basketball Coaches Association Hall of Fame for outstanding achievement in basketball.

 

Homewood library welcomes new trustees, postpones contract OK

Tim Martin and Nancy Gildart were officially sworn in May 15 as the newest members of the Homewood Public Library board of trustees. Martin won a six-year term, and Gildart will serve for two years. Current member Tom Nowak was also sworn in. He won a six-year term.
 

Memorial Day weekend to include benefit golf tourney, ceremony

Memorial Day weekend will be an opportunity not only to memorialize those who have served the country but to help those who are still living and in need. The 10th annual Greater HF Memorial Open golf tournament will take place Friday, May 24, at Coyote Run Golf Course, 800 Kedzie Ave. in Flossmoor. The shotgun start begins at 10 a.m.

Janich leaves HPD for East Hazel Crest, Johnson promoted

The Homewood village board approved three police staffing changes at its May 14 meeting, including the retirement of Roy Janich, who retired on May 2 after more than 30 years with the department.

New Flossmoor trustee Kimmons sworn in with incumbents Hoag, Mitros

​Three recently elected members of the Flossmoor Village Board were sworn in and departing member James Wilder was honored during Monday night’s meeting. Gyata Kimmons is the only new face on the board, while longtime trustees James Mitros and Perry Hoag were both elected to their seventh four-year terms. 

Dixie Highway to close for several weeks north of 175th Street

Barriers were placed along the side of Dixie Highway at the intersection with 175th Street this week in preparation for the closure of a short section of Dixie Highway on May 20. The road soon will be closed from 175th Street north to 174th Street while crews replace a culvert, according to the Illinois Department of Transportation. The nearly $400,000 project is expected to be finished by July 5.

Triumph Building in downtown Homewood sold to developer

The Homewood village board approved the sale of a property at the intersection of Ridge Road and Martin Avenue in downtown Homewood. The building is commonly known as the Triumph Building. It was purchased by HCF Homewood LLC for $1. 
 

H-F parents forum seeks healing, ideas after racist incident

Homewood-Flossmoor High School administrators and staff are continuing their efforts to help the school community deal with the aftermath of a racist incident involving four students late in April.

On Tuesday, H-F hosted the first of two forums for parents of current students. The next forum will be held from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Monday, May 20.
