Read for the benefit of others program starts today at Homewood Public Library

When you pick up a book this summer at the Homewood Public Library, you could be helping a local charity through the “Be a Hero in Our Community: Read for a Cause” program.

The library will be donating $500 to three local charities. Donations will be based on how many books are read in the Adult Summer Reading Program. The prizes will be divided between the charities — $250, $150 and $100.

Homewood police find most retailers comply with tobacco regulations

The village of Homewood last week posted tobacco compliance check results for 2015, and most retailers were found to be in compliance with regulations, according to a news release from Homewood Police Department.

All tobacco retailers in the village were inspected in three rounds of compliance checks from November 2014 to May 2015. In the 45 inspections of 15 retailers, two violations were found of regulations barring the selling of tobacco to minors.

Flossmoor cancels village board meeting

Monday’s Flossmoor Village Board meeting has been canceled. The cancellation was announced on the village’s website. No explanation for the cancellation was given.

The next board meeting will take place Monday, June 15 at 7:30 p.m. in the village hall, 2800 Flossmoor Road.

Six H-F students advance in ACT-SO competition

Students at Homewood-Flossmoor High School have been selected to participate in the national ACT-SO program in July in Atlanta.

Homewood attorneys named to select bar association committees

Two Homewood attorneys have been selected to serve on Illinois State Bar Association (ISBA) select committees.

Lisa McLeod and Masah S. Renwick, partners and founders of Lakeside Law Group, LLP, were appointed to one-year terms beginning July 1. McLeod will serve on the General Practice Solo and Small Firm Section Council and Renwick will serve the Standing Committee on Racial & Ethnic Minorities and Law. 

H-F graduation ceremony will take place inside

Homewood-Flossmoor High School officials announced shortly after 11 a.m. that graduation ceremonies at 1 p.m. today will take place in the south building gym because of weather conditions.

Guests must have a ticket to enter the gym or auditorium. Graduates are allotted three tickets, two for the gym and one for the auditorium.

The ceremony will also be streamed live online.

Barney, Brandt named H-F athletes of the year at banquet Thursday

Almost 70 student-athletes from Homewood-Flossmoor High School filled Idlewild Country Club on Thursday for the school's 37th Annual Senior Athletic Banquet. The night included a dinner for the athletes and their parents. Multiple awards and scholarships were presented throughout the night.

Two Homewood students at Prairie State College have been awarded scholarships to continue their education at Governors State University.
