Gallagher earns speech honors for Prairie State College

Colin Gallagher of Homewood has found a niche in public speaking.

As a member of the Prairie State College (PSC) speech team, the sophomore has placed at four recent competitions and is hoping to represent PSC in national competition.

At a Thursday forum, candidates running for the Flossmoor School District 161 Board of Education offered differing views on how to best keep local schools strong in the face of state budget cuts and constant change.

Recent charges: Dolton man accused of fleeing police, tossing handgun

A Dolton man was charged with aggravated unlawful use of a weapon and resisting a peace officer after he allegedly discarded a weapon and attempted to flee during a traffic stop shortly before 7 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 24.

Xavier J. Harding, 19, of the 15600 block of Ingleside, was a passenger in a vehicle that was stopped by Homewood police in the 18300 block of Dixie Highway after the officer noticed the driver was not wearing a safety belt.

Homewood public works department apparently returned to form Thursday, Feb. 26, to combat several inches of lake effect snow overnight and during the morning hours. 

Flossmoor candidates forum canceled

The League of Women Voters of the Homewood-Flossmoor Area canceled the March 1 Flossmoor Village Board candidate forum after three of the four candidates declined to participate.

Potential budget cuts would save $1.6 million in District 161

Faced with a $200,000 deficit – and that number possibly climbing to $1 million if there’s a severe state funding shortfall – Flossmoor School District 161 officials this week presented a long list of potential spending reductions for the 2015-16 fiscal year.

Misunderstandings over parking lot lead to towed vehicles

The parking lot directly behind Grape & Grain in downtown Homewood is owned by a nearby dentist who enforces his no-parking policy. Several Grape & Grain customers were surprised when their vehicles were towed last week. Village officials plan to work with the two business owners to seek a solution.
