Bring Izaak Walton Preserve into your living room for the winter

I know some folks visit Izaak Walton Preserve year-round. It's as nice a place for a winter walk as for a spring stroll. But for those who prefer to huddle indoors when vicious winds blast the meadows and woodlands of the preserve, there's a way to bring a little of nature's beauty with you for the duration: The sixth annual Izaak Walton Art Show.

More than 180 local senior citizens were given a complementary breakfast, a tour of the new fieldhouse and a chance to join the chorus singing “Happy Birthday” to two centenarians among them.

It was all part of the annual Seniors Breakfast hosted by Homewood-Flossmoor High School Wednesday, Oct. 15.

Last farmers market of the season to include prescription drug drop-off

Saturday, Oct. 11, from 8 a.m. To 1 p.m. Will be the last chance this year for Homewood Farmers Market patrons to enjoy the weekly music, conversations, fresh produce, and crafts, according to a Village of Homewood news release.

The market is located in the parking lot west of Village Hall, 2020 Chestnut Road.

Homewood Hall of Fame induction luncheon Oct. 26 | Registration deadline Oct. 10

The deadline to make reservations to attend the 2014 Homewood Hall of Fame induction ceremony and luncheon is Friday, Oct. 10.

The event was announced at the Village Board of Trustees meeting Tuesday, Sept. 9, by Homewood Heritage Committee Chairwoman Elaine Egdorf. A reception will begin at noon at Calumet Country Club, followed by luncheon and induction ceremony at 1 p.m. The cost is $45.

Ruling in Harvey water suit less than Homewood officials hoped for

The Village of Homewood and other south suburban municipalities did not receive the court ruling they hoped for in a continuing legal battle with the City of Harvey, according to village officials.

Homewood and other suburbs that buy water from Harvey have joined the City of Chicago in requesting a third party be appointed to handle Harvey's water revenues.

Crows beware: Scarecrows flock to Homewood

Crows might want to think twice about visiting Homewood. The first Scarecrow Contest, sponsored by the village Community Relations Committee, has resulted in a small army of scarecrows to protect the community.

The contest was held at Fall Fest on Sept. 20, and village officials plan to post the entries throughout the downtown area soon to keep the village entertained and crow-free for several weeks, at least.
