IPO concert Jan. 17 to feature Hristova on violin

Illinois Philharmonic Orchestra will begin its 2015 concerts at 8 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 17, with what IPO officials call "a powerful program with international flair." Bella Hristova will be the featured soloist.

SSFS resale shop seeks donations, volunteers

One More Thing Resale Shop is seeking donations of gently used furniture at this time. Clothing and other household items are also accepted.

The store is almost entirely run by volunteers, who help with sorting, organizing, pricing and store sales. Male and female volunteers may apply at this time as well.

Brunswick Zone closes for renovation

The sign on the front door says Brunswick Zone XL in Homewood has closed for renovations. So far, no details are available about new owner AMF's plans for the facility.

Nasty weather doesn’t stall tree recycling program (UPDATED Jan. 5)

One day, they are filled with bright lights and sparkling ornaments. They are the centerpiece of holiday celebrations and a yearly family tradition. Children gaze in wonder at their beauty and never forget the spectacle.

The next day they are mulch, among the humblest of all plant matter.

Such is the life of a Christmas tree. But the cycle — from  shining  symbol of the season to ground-up trunk and needles — has become a tradition all its own.

Homewood trustee starts monthly listening sessions at local coffee shop

Homewood Trustee Jay Heiferman's first listening session of the new year will be today from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. at Starbucks on Harwood.

District 153 to conduct preschool screenings Jan. 16

Homewood School District 153 will conduct screenings to determine eligibility for its free preschool program on Friday, Jan. 16, at Willow School, 1804 Willow Road.

Children must be 3 years old on or before Jan. 16. Proof of residency is required at the time of screening, according to school officials.
