Demolition begins on Martin Avenue

Crews began demolition work Tuesday on Martin Avenue north of Ridge Road. The section of Martin Avenue from Ridge to Chestnut Road was closed a week ago in preparation for the work to begin on the streetscape project.

CN to host open house to give community a glimpse of new training facility

Canadian National will host an open house from 10:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Saturday, May 9, to give members of the community an opportunity to see its new training center at 17560 S. Ashland Ave. in Homewood.

Flossmoor Baseball and Softball teams enjoy perfect weather for opening day parade

Flossmoor Baseball and Softball players, coaches and fans were rewarded for their wait. After a rain-out of the opening day parade and festivities April 25, the weather Saturday, May 2, was ample compensation, sunny and mild.

Parolee charged with Flossmoor home burglary

A Flossmoor man, on parole from an Illinois prison, was arrested last week following an April 26 home burglary in the village. Clayton Ebanks, 22, of the 2600 block of Hawthorne Lane, was charged with residential burglary.

Flossmoor approves construction contract for water main project

Flossmoor is continuing its eight-year, $7.28 million water main replacement project, with the latest phase of construction expected to begin later this month. An open house for residents regarding the water main project is scheduled for 6 to 8 p.m. tonight, May 5, at Flossmoor Village Hall, 2800 Flossmoor Road.

Boy on bike, 10, hit by car on Flossmoor Road

A 10-year-old Flossmoor boy, on his way to the baseball field near the village’s downtown area, was injured Monday evening after he turned his bicycle into the path of a car, according to a police report.

The boy was transported by ambulance to Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn, Deputy Police Tod Kamleiter said, adding that it did not appear that his injuries were serious. No traffic citations were issued following the accident, which took place at 6:31 p.m.

H-F board extends teachers’ contract for three years

The Homewood-Flossmoor Board on Monday approved a three-year contract extension with teachers reached through collaborative bargaining. The contract with 220 teachers includes 2.7 percent pay hikes each year. 

H-F High School inducting 111 top students into National Honor Society

Homewood-Flossmoor High School will host its National Honor Society (NHS) induction ceremony for 111 juniors and sophomores today, May 5, at the high school. Guest speaker at the event will be 1968 H-F alumnus and fellow NHS member Edward Monser, president of the Fortune 500 company Emerson.

Volunteers enjoy sunshine as they spruce up H-F parks

Hundreds of volunteers enjoyed a warm spring day Saturday to help prepare Homewood and Flossmoor parks for the busy summer season.

Pam Melnuk, administrative assistant for the H-F Park District, coordinated the effort. She estimated between 300 and 400 volunteers pitched in to spread mulch, pick up litter and debris, weed and plant flowers.

"This is a huge help to the park district," she said. "It would take a lot longer" if district staff had to do the clean-up work themselves. 

Homewood Rail Fest May 16 taps into village history, appeals to railroad buffs of all ages

Homewood was born a railroad town, and it remains a railroad town. To celebrate its rich railroad history, the village will host its annual Rail Fest from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, May 16, in the H-F Park District Auditorium, 2010 Chestnut Road.
