UPDATE:

The National Weather Service in Chicago has issued a winter storm watch that includes all of Cook County, according to a notice on the NWS website.

The watch is in effect most of the day Wednesday, Dec. 24.

Dazzling Dartmouth and other signs of the holiday season

Homewood and Flossmoor residents and businesses have enlightened and enlivened the holiday season with a great variety of decorations, from the spectacular avenue of lights on Dartmouth Avenue in Flossmoor, to the giant inflated Santa Claus at Aurelios in Homewood.

And holiday yard cards made a comeback this year, thanks to the efforts of local artist Teri Cann, who revived the yard card workshop with support from the Village of Homewood and the Homewood-Flossmoor Park District.

Above are a few holiday scenes from around the community.

The Holiday Angels Program run through Flossmoor Community Church got a big boost this year from students and staff at Homewood-Flossmoor High School.

Students collected specific items on the wish lists of 20 needy families selected by local school social workers. The church, acting anonymously, serves as the clearinghouse for distribution of the food, clothing and toys to those families.

Ms. Brockington who serves in the U.S. Navy, has been stationed in Norfolk, Virginia, since June. Her kids didn't know she had been granted a two-week leave," according to the district publication.

Opinion: Good deed becomes charity mishap

Bobby Maszak just wanted to do a good deed for a relative, but a simple online request for a Christmas tree donation went in directions he probably didn't anticipate, and the result might be a cautionary tale for us all.

Maszak posted a message on a local Facebook group Friday, Dec. 12, asking if anyone had a spare Christmas tree. He planned to give it to a Homewood family with three children. The family is struggling financially, and the father told Maszak he didn't think they could afford a tree this year.
