County officer prevents man from apparent jump at Halsted tollway bridge

A Cook County Sheriff’s Police officer this week rescued a man who was apparently attempting to jump from the Halsted Street bridge above Interstate 80/294 on Homewood’s north end.

The Homewood-Flossmoor High School Scholastic Bowl team, undefeated in conference competition, will face its biggest challenge starting Friday when they compete for the state championship.

Village offices prepare to move to make way for renovations

Renovation work on Homewood Village Hall is scheduled to begin April 6, according to Village Manager Jim Marino. Public Works Department crews will be moving second-floor village departments late this week and early next week to the former Ryan Funeral Home, 18022 Dixie Highway.

Survey, community forum focus on District 161 bus realignment

Flossmoor School District 161 is seeking community input on a plan to cut the number of bus routes for elementary students, a move that could reduce the transportation budget by as much as $270,000. Superintendent Craig Doster sent a letter to community members last week informing them of the proposed bus route realignment.

Homewood school board awards tenure to 12 teachers

The Homewood District 153 School Board granted tenure to 12 teachers who have completed three years with the district.

Mary Ellen Derman, Tanya Duplessis, Jaime Herron, Paula Jacobson, Morgan Mackey, Jennifer Ostruszka, Rebecca Pugh, Claire Quasthoff, Emily Sehlke, Monica Sendera, Laurie Valiska and Barbara Van Etten will all be on tenure track when they begin the 2015-2016 school year in August.

New insurance broker will help reduce costs for Homewood-Flossmoor High School staff

The Homewood-Flossmoor District 233 school board selected Mesirow Insurance Services, Inc. hoping for reduced costs and compliance with the federal Affordable Care Act.

The board awarded a one year $38,000 contract to Mesirow for life, accident, death, dismemberment, vision, long term disability, flex insurance plans, COPRA and prescriptions.  District 233 is self-insured for health and dental insurance.

Homewood joins other municipalities in opposing proposed cuts to state funding

Homewood trustees approved a resolution Tuesday, March 10, expressing opposition to Gov. Bruce Rauner's proposal to cut state funding to municipalities by 50 percent.

The resolution states, "The Village of Homewood urges the governor and the General Assembly to protect full funding of the Local Government Distributive Fund and other revenue sources that allow local governments to provide for the health, safety and general welfare of their residents."

Dr. Jenna Kiel has been named the new clinical director for The Cancer Support Center. Staff at the center became familiar with her work when Kiel interned there when she was a doctoral student at the Illinois School of Professional Psychology.

Boy Scout Troop 342 and Cub Scout Pack 304 will begin their seventh decade of annual pancake breakfast fundraisers with the 61st event on Saturday, March 21.
