PARCC off to good start in District 161, superintendent says

PARCC-wise, it’s “so far, so good” in Flossmoor School District 161. Students in grades three through five started taking the new state-mandated exam on Feb. 25 and testing, so far, has gone smoothly, Superintendent Craig Doster said at Monday’s Board of Education meeting.

Four retiring teachers will not be replaced in Flossmoor District 161 next year and nine bus routes may face the budget ax as school officials look to the 2015-16 fiscal year.

Cancer patients were the beneficiaries of a Valentine’s Day flower sale conducted by members of the Early Act Club at Homewood’s Millennium School

Homewood woman charged with domestic battery

A 38-year-old Homewood woman was charged with domestic battery Saturday, March 7, after allegedly stabbing a man with a kitchen knife.

Kenya Frazier, of the 2400 block of 183rd St., was taken into custody after the incident, which occurred between 3:30 and 4:45 p.m., according to the police report.

No information about the victim's condition was provided in the report.

Scenes from St. Baldrick's Day at H-F High School

Homewood-Flossmoor High School Honor Society hosted its sixth annual St. Baldrick's Day fundraiser Saturday, March 7. The goal was to raise money for pediatric cancer research, and a number of students, teachers and community members agreed to have their heads (and chins) shorn to help raise money and to show solidarity with children whose cancer treatments cause them to lose their hair.

Children with cancer often lose their hair as a side effect of treatment. Saturday a number of H-F students, teachers and community members gave up their hair in show of support and to help raise money for pediatric cancer research.

Have Homewood's new water meters affected your bill?

Throughout 2014, new water meters were installed in Homewood. The state-of-the-art technology replaces outmoded meters. As the new meters were installed, some residents began observing changes in water bills. We would like to document stories from residents about what difference (if any) the new meters made in bills for water usage.

Paintertaining gets incentive money, announces opening reception

​​Paintertaining, a paint party company, is setting up a place to do both at 2049 Ridge Road in Homewood. The business has an opening party planned for 6 to 9 p.m. Saturday, March 14. Light refreshments will be served as owners Iesha Bass-Simmons and Terrence Simmons introduce the business to the community.
