H-F speech team regional champions aiming for state honors

The 12-member Homewood-Flossmoor High School speech team is moving closer to state honors after sweeping the competition and winning the title of regional champions at the Feb. 7 Illinois High School Association (IHSA) Regional Tournament.

Flossmoor School District 161’s new school year begins on a Friday

Students in Flossmoor School District 161 will start the 2015-16 academic year on Aug. 21, a Friday. The school calendar, approved Monday by Board of Education members, extends through June 3, also a Friday.

Sample PARCC tests give District 153 board members pause

Students will begin taking the new state mandated five-part assessment test Feb. 25, but at the school board’s meeting Monday, Brabec volunteered to come up to a computer and take a three-part practice test in math designed for a 3rd grader. 

District 161 board rejects computer purchase for PARCC testing

Board of Education members in Flossmoor School District 161 Monday rejected an emergency administration request for new computers to be used during the state-mandated PARCC standardized test, which students will begin taking later this month.

District 153 prepares for summer roof repairs

The Homewood District 153 school board agreed to sell $3.6 million in funding bonds, and hired an architectural firm and a project manager for its major life safety work this summer.

Special guests help Willow School celebrate 100th Day of School

Willow School students and their loved ones gathered at the school Thursday, Feb. 5, to celebrate the 100th Day of School.

They were joined by some very special guests. First, Orland Park children’s author Nancy Gee read her "Mom's Choice" award-winning book, “The Secret Drawer.”

The Homewood-Flossmoor High School poms squad and boys varsity basketball team came to read to Willow students, but sometimes they were read to by the younger students.

The poms squad performed a routine they created to the kids’ tune, “Zero the Hero.”
