A picnic in winter? St. Joseph Parish offers warm event during cold time Jan. 24

The event will feature a summer theme with food, live music and activities, including a $10,000 raffle prize, bingo, and silent auction featuring premium tickets to see the BlackHawks and White Sox and a live taping of NPR’s “Wait Wait ... Don’t Tell Me” program.

Local storytellers to help Homewood Stories celebrate first anniversary

Homewood Stories will celebrate its first anniversary Tuesday, Jan. 20, with a show featuring returning favorites, most of whom are from Homewood. 

Homewood honors Sline for 20 years service

The Village of Homewood honored Sgt. Craig Sline Tuesday, Jan. 13, for 20 years of service to the village. In other business, village trustees approved two purchases and a budget amendment to a street surfacing project.

Homewood trustees move to buy former restaurant on Dixie Highway

Homewood trustees agreed Tuesday to enter into a contract to purchase 18138 Dixie Highway, formerly Savoia T'Go Restaurant. One trustee questioned the wisdom of the purchase.

H-F gets ‘A’ ranking in online survey

Homewood-Flossmoor High School earned an overall rating of ‘A’ in 2015 rankings released this week by Niche.com

Based on surveys by current students, parents, alumni and administrators, as well as available data from government sources, H-F was ranked 24th amount Illinois’ top high schools.

Responses are scored by Niche.com and judged against all qualifying schools to translate into a final grade on the school’s performance.

A musical respite from winter Thursday, Jan. 22, at 7:30 p.m. as the next concert in the TrueMuse jazz series features Latin sounds of Sueños.

District 161 board to revisit safety policy after assault incident

A Parker Junior High School mother described Monday how her 12-year-old daughter was assaulted at the school last month, then sent home on her own recognizance.

After that, she said, the girl showed signs of a head injury. She was examined by an orthodontist, who found damage, and was admitted to a hospital.

District 161 surveying parents on Mandarin program

Mandarin, the world's most-spoken language, is coming to Flossmoor School District 161. Parker Junior High students take advantage of H-F's Chinese language class next year.
