Late winter storm causes travel woes Wednesday

Eight students will be representing Homewood-Flossmoor High School at the National Scholastics Quiz Bowl Championship in June.

The H-F team will be competing against teams representing nearly 100 high schools from across the country and around the world. The H-F team qualified for the national event in Chicago by placing eighth at the Illinois State Championship meet in February.

Quiz Bowl is an academic competition played between two teams of up to four players. Players buzz in on questions, which cover a wide range of academic topics including literature, history, science and the arts.

H-F students have been winners in numerous Scholastic Bowl competitions, which have five members on a team. Scholastic Bowl include math computation questions, as well as literature, history, science and the arts, explained H-F teacher Michael Sacks, who coaches both teams.

“Until this year, the Illinois High School Association has not recognized four-on-four national format Quiz Bowl matches as part of organized Scholastic Bowl, so this year we’ve had to treat it as two separate teams,” Sacks said.

Students who will represent H-F are Ethan Bosch, Nathaniel Bouchie, Michael Gislason, Lily Hamer and Lauren Torian. Three other teammates will be selected in the future.

The national tournament will be hosted by Partnership for Academic Competition Excellence (PACE). Founded in 1996 by a volunteer group of players and coaches, PACE has been promoting high school Quiz Bowl for nearly 20 years. In addition to running the annual National Scholastics Championship, PACE recognizes high quality local tournaments and sponsors the Quiz Bowl Resource Center, a hub for tournaments, question sets and discussion.
