Testing to update Flossmoor’s police eligibility list scheduled this summer

June 13, 2016 - 13:55

Flossmoor is getting ready to test applicants to the village’s police department.

The department needs to update its eligibility list for prospective officers every two years, Police Chief Michael Pulec said. The current list expires in September.

Pulec announced the latest round of testing last week. Application packets will be available at the police department beginning June 20. The department is located in the village hall at 2800 Flossmoor Road. Applicants must pick up the packets in person and return their applications by noon on July 15.

The written test will be administered Aug. 13.

Prior to taking the written test, applicants must submit proof that they successfully completed a strength and agility test -- the Illinois Peace Officer Wellness Evaluation Report (P.O.W.E.R.) – within the last six months. The test is administered at the Northeastern Illinois Public Safety Training Academy, Joliet Junior College and Triton College.

Pulec said applicants who pass the written test are interviewed by Flossmoor’s Fire and Police Commission. Names of applicants who are approved by the commission will be added to the department’s new eligibility list.

Applicants are also subject to a background check and medical and psychological examinations. They must be United States citizens, high school graduates and between the ages of 21 and 34 when they apply.

Upon their appointment to the police department, job candidates must live within 30 miles of Flossmoor Village Hall.

Flossmoor police officers receive a starting salary of $52,199. After six years, the salary can go up to $85,581. Benefits include a uniform allowance, life insurance, partially-paid health insurance, a nationwide public employee health program, vacation time, floating holidays and a pension plan.

The Flossmoor Police Department currently has 19 full-time officers. There are about 30 candidates on the current eligibility list. Pulec said only one officer was hired from the current list.

“There’s not a lot of turnover on this department,” he said. “Our officers stay here for a long time. That’s one of the reasons people like working here.”
