Fresh air, fun science and a chance to help the Homewood Science Center continue to grow. That’s what Walk Walton, a PopUp Science fundraiser, has to offer area residents from noon to 3 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 23.
Walk Walton will be the HSC’s first fall festival. The event will be an opportunity to escape into the beauty of autumn on a guided nature walk or stroll the trails on your own with a self-guided tour through Izaak Walton Nature Preserve, 1100 Ridge Road in Homewood.
There will be activities for people of all ages, according to HSC officials.
Festival goers get a double dose of PopUp Science included in the admission price:
- “Spooky Science,” a Halloween edition of PopUp Science, will offer a chance to mix potions at the Mad Scientist station, explore bones and brains with Gross Anatomy, or take a photo and haunt your friends as Pepper’s Ghost.
- “Autumn Ecology” will include a seasonal look at what lives in our forests. Test your inner engineer by constructing a tree using candy corn. A hammer, leaves and paper are all you need to create a masterpiece at our Leaf Chromatography station. There will be pine cones, insects, animal furs and more to explore.
Kids will love roasted marshmallows, campfire stories and music by Scribble Monster.
For an additional cash fee there will be food from Twisted Q and beer from Vice District Brewery, and kids can decorate a pumpkin at the pumpkin patch.
Raffle tickets are three for $5 or 10 for $10. Prizes include Chicago Bears tickets for the Oct. 31 game, a stay for two at Chicago’s Blackstone Hotel, a family pass to Museum of Science and Industry and more. There will also be a 50/50 raffle. Winners must be present when the raffle is called.
As a legacy gift to honor their partnership, HSC will unveil a newly designed trail map for Homewood’s Izaak Walton Preserve. It is the first time the trail map has been updated in about 50 years.
Proceeds from Walk Walton will benefit HSC’s PopUp Science series.
PopUp Science events began in May. Since then, more than 1,500 people from around the South Suburbs have participated in the free activities. Neuroscience, physics, engineering, botany, astronomy, marine biology, earth science, anatomy and social science are just some of the science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) topics that families and individuals explored.
“PopUp Science has been popular and the demand is growing, including the request to bring the program into local classrooms,” HSC officials said in a news release. “Expanding PopUp Science can only be done with your help. Join in the festivities at Walk Walton, A PopUp Science Fundraiser.”
The pre-sale ticket price for adults is $25. After Oct. 20, the cost will be $30. Tickets may be purchased at the door and kids under the age of 18 are free when accompanied by a paid adult. Tickets can be purchased at www.homewoodsciencecenter.org.
