The Homewood Public Library offers the opportunity for you and your teammates to test your brainpower at its Spell Check: Adult Spelling Bee on Oct. 1.

In addition, the Friends of the Homewood Library is offering a raffle for a Chicago performance of the musical “Hamilton” in January 2017.

The 7 p.m. adult spelling bee is a fun way to help the library raise funds for equipment for the Maker Space. Teams of four will be competing for the Fuzzy Bee trophy as emcees Amy Eagle and Nicholas Quirke take competitors through the labyrinth of words.

“Intense pressure? Maybe. Nerve-wracking? Expected. A good time? Absolutely! I guarantee there will be plenty of laughs and lots to cheer about,” said Amy Crump, library director. The evening event, for persons 21 and older, also features a silent auction, food and drinks. Registration extends through Sept. 15.

Spell Check is limited to 15 teams. The registration fee is $200. Team costumes and cheering sections are encouraged.

If you’re not into team membership, come out in support of a team or be an impartial observer for a $5 donation.

Proceeds from the event will help underwrite the cost of a Glow Forge laser cutter for the Maker Space, part of the Digital Media Lab.

The “Hamiltons for Hamilton” raffle will be held through the month of September. Tickets are $75 and available at the library. Guests at Spell Check will be able to purchase raffle tickets for $50.

Spell Check: Adult Spelling Bee is sponsored by Wiley’s Grill/H-F Park District and the Homewood-Flossmoor Chronicle and hosted by the Friends of the Homewood Library.
