Flossmoor hosts back to school event Aug. 18

As another academic year begins, the village of Flossmoor is partnering with local school districts to welcome students back to the classroom.

The village is hosting a Back to School Meet and Greet from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Aug. 18 at Flossmoor Park, 2523 Flossmoor Road. Officials from Flossmoor District 161 and Homewood-Flossmoor High School will be on hand to meet students and their parents prior to that night’s Movies in Our Parks presentation.

The film, “The Jungle Book,” will begin at 7:45 p.m.

School officials will pass out Zarlengo’s Italian ice treats. Free giveaways from the village, Flossmoor Public Library and Meijer are also planned.

“This is a great opportunity to connect the community with village and school officials,” said Flossmoor Village Manager Bridget Wachtel. “We are happy to work with not only School District 161, but also the Flossmoor library and H-F Park District on this event.”

Wachtel said it’s the first time that the village and school districts have partnered on a back to school event.

District 161 Superintendent Dana Smith said the meet and greet “is a great opportunity for local organizations to work together on a fun event.”

“The District 161 Board of Education is eager to partner with our community stakeholders and the Village of Flossmoor is a great place to start,” he said. “Ideally, we will find additional opportunities to work with all of the communities that we serve as a school district.”

Besides Flossmoor, District 161 includes sections of Homewood, Hazel Crest, Olympia Fields and Chicago Heights.

Smith said District 161 has hired new administrators and has a new opportunity to form a strong relationship with members of the community.

“It is important to the Board of Education that we have a fun and inviting event to meet our students and families before the school year starts to really begin the year on a positive note,” he said.

Smith said District 161 is sharing information about the event with its families. The meet and greet is also being promoted by the village, the Flossmoor library and H-F High School.

“This is a community event so I hope that we will have a great turnout,” he said.

Classes at H-F High School begin Aug. 16. The first day of class in District 161 is Aug. 24.

Movies in Our Parks is a free community program sponsored by the village of Flossmoor and Flossmoor library, the village of Homewood and Homewood library, and the park district.
