Homewood trustees to consider economic development measures, mining special use permit at Tuesday meeting

The Homewood Board of Trustees will have several economic development-related measures to consider at its regular meeting at 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday.

It will also consider granting a special use permit to allow Hanson Materials to conduct mining, blasting and extraction of aggregate in the quarry area just south of Interstate 80/294 and east of Halsted Street.

Among the economic development measures is an ordinance seeking alternative bids for the sale of village owned property on the northwest corner of Halsted and 175th streets.

The measure is preliminary to a possible redevelopment project at the site currently occupied by a former bank building.

Vice District Brewing is asking the board for a 12-month extension of its business incentive funding benefits. Last year, the board approved $100,000 to help the craft brewer acquire and build out a brewery and taproom at 18029 Dixie Highway.

The brewery experienced a number of delays, especially in the addition of a higher capacity water line that will involve excavaction of Dixie Highway. The brewery is awaiting approval from the Illinois Department of Transportation to begin the work.

The board will also consider a request from Fratello’s Cafe and Deli for a sign variance at the company’s second Homewood location, 17929 Halsted St.

In other business, the board will consider several personnel changes at the Homewood Police Department:

  • Sgt. Dave Tobin is retiring
  • Lawrence Garrett will take the oath of office as a new officer
  • Jack Lenox will be promoted to sergeant

The board will also approve the reappointments of Pamela Lau, Terry Keigher, Marcia Nicholson and Craig Schmidt to the Economic Development Committee.
