Hofeld rescued after falling through nature preserve ice

Homewood Mayor Richard Hofeld is recovering Monday after falling through some ice rescuing his dog Sunday.

According to a village statement, Hofeld and and his wife were walking with their dogs in a nature preserve when one walked onto an iced-over lake. He went after the dog and attempted to rescue it and both fell through the ice.

According to published reports, the incident took place at Homewood’s Izaak Walton Nature Preserve, which has a lake and several ponds.

Hofeld managed to save the dog but was unable to free himself.

A passing jogger dialed 911. Hofeld and his wife had left their cell phones in the car.

“I want to remind everyone to remember to carry your cell phone on walks,” Hofeld said in the statement.

The Homewood Fire Department arrived and rescued the mayor after he was in the water for about 20 minutes.

Hofeld was taken to Advocate South Suburban Hospital in Hazel Crest and held overnight for observation. He was released on Monday.

“I’m doing fine,” Hofeld said. “I’m grateful for the good Samaritan who called 911 and the speedy work of the first responders. I am also thankful for all the phone calls with well wishes and people asking how I’m doing. I’m fine and ready to get back to work.”
