Search for new assistant village manager to begin in Homewood

Homewood will soon begin a search for an assistant village manager following the resignation of Michael Marzal, which became effective Jan. 27.

At the village board meeting Feb. 14, trustees voted unanimously to accept Marzal’s letter of resignation and release. The action, which was part of the meeting’s omnibus vote, was not discussed by the board.

Village Manager Jim Marino said after the meeting that the search for a new assistant manager has not begun yet, but will soon be underway. He said the duties of the position generally include human resources, labor contract negotiations and various other negotiations, assisting with the village budget and other municipal operations.

According to information in the village budget, the salary range for the position is $84,519 to $113,301.

Marzal joined Homewood in October 2012. Previously he served four years in Lincolnwood as assistant village manager. Prior to that, he was economic development coordinator in Woodstock. Marzal also served a two-year internship as an administrative assistant in Tinley Park.

He is a graduate of Northern Illinois University where he obtained a master's degree in public administration and urban management in 2006. He also earned a bachelor of science degree in public affairs at Indiana University-Bloomington in 2004.

According to a report published at the time of his hiring, Marzal said he was a native of the South Suburbs and was happy to have the opportunity to come to Homewood. At that time he lived in Tinley Park and said that in his youth he had participated in swimming and hockey events at Homewood-Flossmoor High School.

After the meeting, both Mayor Richard Hofeld and Marino declined to comment on the board’s action, stating it involved a personnel issue.
