A Metra police officer this week removed a political banner from the railing above the north entrance to FIossmoor’s commuter station.
Metra spokesman Michael Gillis said the banner was removed by an officer on March 8.
“We don’t allow political signs on our property,” Gillis said on Friday.
Tod Kamleiter, Flossmoor’s deputy police chief, said his department received a complaint about the banner, which was located over the station walkway just east of Sterling Avenue. Police determined the railing was not village property and contacted Metra, he said.
Metra determined the area above the walkway belongs to the rail agency and sent an officer to Flossmoor to take down the banner, Kamleiter said. A Flossmoor ordinance control officer was present when the banner was removed, he said.
Kamleiter said he spoke with Flossmoor Station owner Dean Armstrong, who told him he had given his permission to hang the banner. Armstrong told him he leases the area north of the restaurant and brewery ― which includes the railing and some parking ― from Metra, Kamleiter said.
However, since the railing is owned by Metra, the agency’s rules against signs still apply, Kamleiter said.
