Gerald Pauling received a round of applause after he was sworn in as a new District 233 board member serving Homewood-Flossmoor High School.

Fellow board members also elected Pauling the board’s vice president-secretary by a 6-1 vote with member Beth Larocca voting no.

After taking the oath of office, Pauling said, “I hope to honor the encouragement and support (of family and friends) by serving in a manner that makes you proud. I feel I owe a lot to H-F and I hope that by serving I can begin to give back some of what H-F gave to me.  The road won’t be easy. We have a lot of work to do. I want to continue on the trajectory that we’re on.”

Pauling is filling the seat of Tim Wenckus, who resigned late in August. The board interviewed four potential candidates at a special meeting Sept. 24 and voted 4-2 for Pauling. Members Annette Bannon and Beth Larocca voted against his appointment.

Pauling had served seven years on the school board before he lost re-election in April 2017.

“I am honored to have been selected to serve again,” he told the Chronicle. “I’m looking forward to working with the board to create the best opportunities and outcomes possible for our students, our school and our community.”

He will be running for a four-year term in the April 2 election. Residents will elect four new District 233 board members.

Pauling asked the community to share their comments and concerns about the high school and board actions, noting that feedback is important and “this is something we must all do together.”

Pauling is a partner at the law firm Seyfarth Shaw with a practice focusing on employment litigation and labor and employee relations.

He is a 1985 graduate of H-F who has lived in the community for over 40 years. He and his wife, Eugenia, have three children. Their sons are a senior and a sophomore at H-F, and their daughter is a 2016 graduate.
