Pop’s Snack Shop in downtown Homewood is about candy — but not just about candy, according to owners of the new business, Richard and Rita Gavin. They also intend it to fill a niche that has faded from the scene in recent years.

Quite a few places, from big box stores to gas stations to liquor stores, sell candy. The Gavins see Pop’s as more of an old-fashioned sweet shop, place for kids to gather and find their favorite sweets in a family-friendly environment.

The shop at 18063 Dixie Highway has been open since Nov. 27, but the grand opening and ribbon cutting ceremony were held Saturday, Dec 14.

The shelves are filled with old favorites and new treats, from candy and candy bars to chocolate, cakes and popcorn, Richard said. He said the shop is patterned after a sweet shop he remembers from his childhood.

“It’s a place for kids to be kids,” he said.

“Or adults to be kids,” Rita added.

The shop’s hours are 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday through Friday, noon to 8 p.m. Saturday and noon to 6 p.m. Sunday.
