Unanimous consent for District 233 levy

The District 233 school board unanimously approved the 2019 levy at the Dec. 17 board meeting.

The district is requesting the Cook County Clerk’s Office to raise $39.8 million in property taxes for Homewood-Flossmoor High School.

Members Annette Bannon and Beth Larocca have voted against levies in the past, but they joined with the majority of the board in approving the levy.

The board earlier this year accepted a $1.9 million grant from the state that allowed District 233 to abate $2 million in property taxes.

The district will be applying for another state grant. If it wins this second grant, board members hope to abate approximately $1.3 million.

Board members are still anticipating legislative action on a proposed property tax freeze. Now school districts are under a tax cap that restricts them from raising taxes. This year districts could levy for an increase of only 1.9 percent, equal to the Consumer Price Index.
