Bruni, Nelson announced write-in candidacies in Flossmoor board election

Two write-in candidates are running for seats on the Flossmoor Village Board in the April 2 consolidated election.

David Bruni and Michelle Svetic Nelson Tuesday filed the necessary paperwork to be write-in candidates with the Cook County Clerk’s Office. They are running as a team for two of the three trustee seats at stake in the April election.

On Jan. 22, Bruni was officially removed from the ballot by the Flossmoor election board, which upheld two of five objections to Bruni’s candidate petitions by Perry Hoag and James Mitros, who are both incumbent trustees running for re-election.

The election board – made up of Mayor Paul Braun, Trustee Philip Minga and Village Clerk Joni Bradley-Scott – ruled that Bruni had not properly numbered or bound his petition pages. Under state election law, the board has the power to decide ballot questions on the local level. The makeup of the board is dictated by state election law.

Besides Hoag and Mitros, there is currently only one other candidate, Gyata Kimmons, on the ballot for the three four-year trustee positions.

Bruni said Tuesday that “having your name on the ballot is an obvious advantage.” But he believes that he had a chance to win as a write-in and that “the people of Flossmoor are ready for change.”

“The encouragement to continue coupled with the amount of support I’ve received has been humbling and overwhelming,” Bruni said. “This wonderful community is truly ready for fresh ideas, forward thinking and swift action.”

Nelson told the H-F Chronicle that her goal in running as a write-n candidate “is to get the ideas flowing, discussion moving and set Flossmoor up for success according to what is important to this community.”

“Without a challenged election, there is stagnation and voter apathy,” she said. “We want to give our neighbors the chance to exchange ideas and grow in the process. Dave and I are in this to work together with the community and move Flossmoor forward.”
