Zena Smith, founder and CEO of MASTERs Plus Tutoring Program in Flossmoor, is participating in the Goldman Sachs 10,000 Small Businesses program.

She was selected to be one of 40 small business owners from more than 1,000 applicants interested in the program.

Smith will be in Chicago interacting with and learning from business leaders and mentors over a 14-week period.

“I’m receiving one-to-one business advising, legal advice, marketing and research assistance, financial statement analysis training and such valuable training,’’ she said. “I feel so much more confident and ready for the growth that has come my way.

“The Goldman Sachs 10,000 Small Business Program is the equivalent of the first year of an elite MBA, and I’m just so excited and honored to have been selected,” she said.

The program is designed to help participants develop a business network and benefit from support services designed to help the entrepreneurs excel while making a social impact.

“One of my favorite parts of this program is that Goldman Sachs doesn’t just want to help businesses make money – they want to help us make a difference,’’ said Smith, who opened MASTERs Plus in 2011 to help students achieve academic success and boost standardized test scores.

The tutoring service is at 19150 Kedzie Ave., Suite 203A in Flossmoor, with a second office in Tinley Park. Tutors work with students one-on-one to improve math and reading grades and boost ACT/SAT scores.

Smith also created the non-profit organization, OASIS Educational Foundation, to help close the growing academic achievement gap.

“My commitment to my community has remained unchanged:  to provide superior supplemental educational support services that will help students excel. As I grow, I will hire more teachers and tutors and that adds jobs to our current community economics,” she said.
