H-F student artists win top prizes, scholarships at state art exhibition

Homewood-Flossmoor High School students took top honors in a juried art exhibition and earned early $1 million in scholarships. 

The pieces were exhibited at the 6th annual Illinois High School Art Exhibition at the Zhou B Art Center in Chicago on Feb. 24. The exhibition is a not-for-profit whose mission is to enhance the creative educational landscape.

More than 800 works from 120 high schools were on display. Judging was done in eight categories. 

Caroline Koranda’s four creative panels titled “Our Earth” won the Best of Show in Design award. Caroline Larocca’s embroidery on racquets was named Best of Show in Mixed Media. Emma McKillip’s photo of a young woman in a portrait gallery won the Gold in Photography award. In 2018, McKillip won a bronze award.

Best of Show awards typically earn between $600 and $700 in cash and prizes. Gold awards typically earn between $500 and $600 in cash and prizes.

H-F was one of just four schools to have three award winners.

H-F’s Fine Arts Department also had seven seniors who submitted portfolios for judging in the Illinois High School Senior Scholarship Exhibition. This show awards prizes and scholarships to student who will pursue a career in fine arts in college.

There were more than 500 works on display, including pieces by Adam Freeman, Caroline Koranda, Caroline Larocca, Shallon Malfeo, Emma McKillip and Valeria Nieves.

Emma McKillip won a Silver Award for her photograph. 
 
Caroline Larocca, Audrey McKillip and Matt Turnquest were offered scholarships to the Milwaukee Institute of Art & Design and the Art Academy of Cincinnati.
 
Emma McKillip was offered scholarships to the Art Academy of Cincinnatti, the Milwaukee Institute of Art & Design and the Watkins College of Art.
 
Callista Stilts was offered scholarships to the Watkins College of Arts, the Art Academy of Cincinnati and Western Michigan University.
 
Arianna Turne was offered scholarships from the Watkins College of Art, the Art Academy of Cincinnati, Western Michigan University and the Milwaukee Institute of Art & Design.
 
Alexander Wilson was offered scholarships from the Watkins College of Art, the Milwaukee Institute of Art & Design the Art Academy of Cincinnati, the Rocky Mountain College of Art & Design and the School of the Art Institute of Chicago.

“Our art students are really fantastic.  They are incredibly hard workers dedicated to their craft,” said teacher and Fine Arts Department chair Jackie Wargo. “I am so happy for them that they are recognized for their skill and creativity on a state-wide level.  I am truly privileged to work in a department with these students and with our tremendous faculty.”
