Memorial Day weekend will be an opportunity not only to memorialize those who have served the country but to help those who are still living and in need.

The 10th annual Greater HF Memorial Open golf tournament will take place Friday, May 24, at Coyote Run Golf Course, 800 Kedzie Ave. in Flossmoor. The shotgun start begins at 10 a.m.

Registration is $100 and includes 18 holes with cart, driving range access, drink tickets and lunch.

The tournament benefits the Wally Burns VFW Post 8077.

Post Commander John Beele said the proceeds have been used in big ways and small to help veterans or service members and their families. In recent years, for example, the post made a donation to a  serviceman’s widow, and it once sent a small veterans group on an Honor Flight, allowing the veterans to visit war memorials in Washington, D.C.

On Monday, May 27, the VFW post will organize the traditional H-F Memorial Day parade and ceremony.

Local veterans, community leaders and student musicians will march from St. Joseph Catholic Church south on Dixie Highway to Olive Road, then west to the Veterans Memorial on Harwood Avenue. The parade will begin at 10:30 a.m.

Prior to the parade, Boy Scouts sell American flags along the route, and Girl Scouts often sell poppies.

Following the parade, the community gathers at the memorial for a ceremony featuring patriotic music, invocations and a wreath ceremony.

Beele will serve as master of ceremonies.
