Olympia Fields Park District to host Underground Railroad Tour Sept. 19

Olympia Fields Park District will offer a bus tour on Thursday,  Sept. 19, providing an opportunity to learn about the local history of the Underground Railroad.

The tour will begin at 9:30 a.m. The registration deadline is Sept. 10. The cost is $80 per person, which includes lunch and transportation. To register, call 708-481-7313, extension 221.

The tour will include visits to two designated sites on the National Park Service’s “Network to Freedom,” significant locations that have a verifiable connection to the Underground Railroad. The program starts in Crete and ends at the Jan Ton Farm near Riverdale.

Th five-and-a-half hour tour with lunch will be narrated by Larry McClellan, an authority on the Underground Railroad in Northern Illinois, and Tom Shepherd of the Little Calumet River Underground Railroad Project. They will share stories of the freedom seekers and those who helped them on the perilous journey.
