The part-time coordinator is responsible for the planning and organization of village events and acts as the liaison between the village and its volunteer-based commissions.

Brookens said she looks forward to bringing her experience and skills working with volunteers, community partners and event planning to her new role.

“My past experiences of volunteerism have afforded me the qualifications to function well in this role,” she said. “I look forward to the continued work of building programs that bring people together to have fun, serve and realize we have more in common than we think.”

Brookens also serves as the founding executive director of PLAN4Success Foundation, a non-profit organization that provides educational, social and cultural experiences for teens and young adults in the Chicago area. She also established a memorial scholarship fund and developed more than a dozen workshops that provide life skills, career development, financial literacy and college preparation for PLAN4Success participants.

Her volunteer experience includes working with Homewood School District 153, serving on the University of Chicago Laboratory School High School Council and partnering with Girls 4 Science.

Brookens holds a Bachelor of Arts in Public Administration from Northern Illinois University and a Executive Coaching Program Certificate from the University of Chicago.

“Nicole’s work in the non-profit sector, especially her experience in event planning, is a huge asset to the village,” said Village Manager Bridget Wachtel. “We’re looking forward to that experience and her enthusiasm benefitting our community.”

Brennan Levy told the H-F Chronicle she is settling into an empty-nester lifestyle, visiting her children downstate at the University of Illinois and planning several trips this fall.

“I truly valued my three years as program and events coordinator at the village of Flossmoor,” she said. “The thing that impressed me most about working for a municipality is the confident reliance on community partners to get things done. Internally, I worked with every department — from public works to police and fire to finance — to create programs and events. The appointed commissioners, in conjunction with volunteers, worked tirelessly for the community in their respective areas.”

Brennan Levy worked with other community partners, including the Flossmoor Public Library, School District 161, Homewood-Flossmoor High School, the Homewood-Flossmoor Park District, Flossmoor businesses and neighboring towns. She said she will miss working with her “tight-knit working group,” including Wachtel, Assistant Manager Allison Matson, Communications Coordinator Amy Kent and Jen Fisher in the Building Department.

“I also had the pleasure of working with Nickie Brookens for the past few weeks preparing for Flossmoor Fest,” she said. ”Trust me, we are all in capable hands.”
