Flossmoor discourages in-person services as restrictions expand

As COVID-19 continues to threaten Cook County and its reach extends into the South Suburbs, Flossmoor has expanded its contingency plan to continue its protection of village employees and the public.

The village announced updates to its coronavirus response in a March 16 media advisory.

As the national emergency continues, Flossmoor is discouraging in-person transactions at village hall. In the meantime, residents are encouraged to conduct business via mail, drop box, email or phone.

Effective immediately, village staff will not take vehicle stickers and animal tag applications or renewals in person. All vehicle sticker and animal tags applications must be mailed or dropped off in the village’s parking lot or police department drop boxes.

Additionally, the village is waiving the post-April 15 fee schedule (late fees) for the 2020/2021 season and delaying enforcement of the display of vehicle stickers until May 15.

At this time, Flossmoor Village Board meetings are still ongoing as scheduled, but the agenda for each meeting will be expedited and limited to essential business only so as to reduce the amount of social contact between elected officials, staff and members of the public. This arrangement is subject to change as conditions warrant.

Future meetings of the Plan Commission and Zoning Board of Appeals are under review and may be canceled in light of the ongoing coronavirus concerns. The village’s Community Relations Commission, Public Art Commission and Green Commission March meetings have been canceled.

Village staff will also not be conducting field visits for meter installations, drainage concerns, child safety seat installations and non-life-safety inspections for the time being. Emergency services will continue normally, unless otherwise advised.

Between now and April 6, while schools are closed and more families are homebound, no water will be shut off. The purchase of daily commuter parking passes will be cash only at the Police Department counter.

“Every organization and business including all units of government have a responsibility to do our part during this national emergency,” said Mayor Paul Braun. “We recognize that the Village of Flossmoor must provide essential services to our community and we will not let our residents down. Village employees will continue to work to ensure that residents have clean water and fire and police response.

“We realize that other service changes will be inconvenient but are very important and necessary to reduce the risk of virus exposure to the public and our employees so that we can ensure essential services continue to be maintained.”

This is an ongoing situation and the Village of Flossmoor will continually update residents on current safety standards and restrictions. For up-to-date information, the village asks residents to visit www.flossmoor.org and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention at www.cdc.gov
