Coping with COVID: May 3

H-F COVID-19 case demographics. State testing and case numbers climb, deaths drop. County Commissioner continues series of virtual town hall sessions on Monday.

H-F COVID-19 demographics. According to the Cook County Medical Examiner’s office, the 16 people in Homewood who have died as of May 3 after contracting COVID-19 were evenly split by gender. All were over age 50, and 14 of 16 were over age 70. Thirteen were African American and three were white. Six people have died in Flossmoor and were also evenly split by gender. All were over age 70. Three were African American and three were white.

New local cases. Homewood and Flossmoor both added cases in Sunday’s report from the Cook County Department of Public Health. Homewood added eight cases, bringing the total confirmed cases to 181. Flossmoor added four for a total of 59. The state’s testing numbers continued to increase, topping 19,000 in a 24-hour period for the first time. That contributed to an increase in positive cases of 2.994. The number of deaths in the previous 24 hours dropped, however, the lowest number since 50 deaths were recorded on April 27.
