Calumet County Club is open for golfing

The future of Calumet Country Club appears to be short as the property’s new owner prepares to convert the century-old club into a warehousing facility, but its focus in the present is the same as always: golf.

While controversy over the redevelopment plan raged this spring, the course quietly opened April 1, and golfers have been getting in rounds, according to assistant manager Chris Fitch.

On Tuesday, the weather was cool and breezy, but sunny conditions made it a good day for play, and the course was peppered with players. One golfer came into the pro shop to get a receipt and booked tee times for the following week.

Ftich said business has been picking up.

The course, which for most of its history was private, was opened to the public on a limited basis in 2019. Memberships are still available, and members get a number of perks, but anyone can reserve a tee-time on the club’s website, Fitch said.

“A lot of people still don’t know it’s public,” he said.

Although residents opposed to the redevelopment plan have vowed to continue the fight against it, this season could be the last chance for the region’s golfers to get in a round on the historic course.

Fitch said the course is in good condition. The superintendent and grounds crew work long hours to keep it in shape, he said.

“It’s a beautiful course,” he said.

While the clubhouse is not offering the meal and banquet services of the club’s heyday, Fitch said food and beverages are still available, and the grill gets fired up on weekends and sometimes during busy weekdays.
