Commissioner Miller, Chief Davis join call to action against gun violence

Cook County Commissioner Donna Miller (D-6th) and Mitchell R. Davis, Hazel Crest police chief and president of the Illinois Association of Chiefs of Police, joined reformed felon Victor Woods on Aug. 25 for a call to action to end gun violence.

Woods is the author of “A Breed Apart” and creator of the non-profit Chicago Peace Organization. He led a diverse team of educators, municipal leaders and reformed felons into Cook County Jail Division 11 on Wednesday to urge those incarcerated to pledge to stop gun violence.

Woods’ work is an effort to stop senseless gun violence deaths. Woods and his 11 member team discussed the stigma, societal blight and difficulties of life after incarceration. At the end of the conversation inmates were asked to sign a pledge not to kill innocent children, women, and men upon their release.

This was the team’s second visit into Cook County Jail asking inmates to pledge. The transformative stories Wood and his team share “speak directly to the hearts and minds of the inmates that they are inviting to join them in this brotherhood of being agents of change,” Miller said.
