Charges filed in fatal crash on 183rd Street last year

Charges were filed Friday against the 21-year-old driver of a Porsche that was involved in an accident that resulted in the death of an Indiana man last summer, according to a Homewood Police statement.

Lindsey Anderson, of Homewood, was charged with aggravated DUI involving death, reckless homicide, aggravated unlawful use of a weapon and unlawful possession of cannabis.

The July 22, 2020, incident occurred at 5:11 p.m. in the 1200 block of 183rd Street. Anderson’s Porsche and a red Buick were in a front yard on the south side of the street when Homewood police arrived, each with only one person inside. Both were transported to area hospitals, per the report.

The driver of the Buick, 19-year-old Dominique Wood of Merrillville, Indiana, later died. His car was struck by Anderson’s while moving southbound on Center Avenue across the westbound lanes of 183rd Street.

A report from the Suburban Major Accident Reconstruction Team concluded that the impact speed of the Porsche was 66 mile per hour.

Homewood police say Anderson had 283 grams of cannabis in candy and plant form and a firearm without the required permits. The gun was reported stolen to Indianapolis police in June 2019.

Anderson is scheduled for a bond hearing on Saturday.

Following the crash, Homewood officials implemented several measures intended to increase safety at the intersection of 183rd and Center, including installing pylons that prevent vehicles on Center from crossing 183rd, adjusting the traffic light sequence a block east and removing several trees that could obstruct drivers’ line of sight.

Village officials pledged to conduct a traffic study of the 183rd Street to explore further safety measures.
