Homewood trustees to consider settlement over Calumet Country Club lawsuit

At its regular meeting on Tuesday, Jan. 26, the Homewood Board of Trustees will consider an agreement to settle a lawsuit filed against the village. The purchaser of the former Calumet Country Club property, 2136 175th St., filed suit in Cook County Circuit Court to disconnect the property from Homewood.

A statement released by the village today, Thursday, Jan. 21, said the settlement agreement is the culmination of intense negotiations to avoid a trial that would be extremely challenging for Homewood to win. If disconnected, the property owner could annex into the village of Hazel Crest.

The village believes without this property remaining in Homewood, village officials would have no say in the proposed development of a distribution/fulfillment center, nor would it have any ability to mitigate impacts to residents.

The property owner has said he will develop a distribution/fulfillment center whether the property is in Homewood or Hazel Crest. While this use is not preferred, Homewood has no good options other than to consider settling the lawsuit if it wishes to keep the property in Homewood and maintain some control over the development, according to the statement.

The judge has set a March 5 trial date. Because time is of the essence to reach a settlement and avoid trial, the settlement agreement will be on the board’s agenda Tuesday.

A full agenda and additional information will be posted on Friday, Jan. 22, 2021, to the village website, homesweethomewood.com

The public may submit questions and comments by email to [email protected] or by placing written comments in the dropbox outside the Village Hall no later than 3 p.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 26.

Questions submitted prior to this deadline will be answered at the board meeting. All questions submitted thereafter will be posted and answered on the village website, homesweethomewood.com. All repeat comments and questions will be read and/or answered only once.
