Sabrena Lopez takes seat on Homewood Public Library board

The Homewood Public Library welcomed its newest board member, Sabrena Lopez, at the May 19 meeting.

Nancy Gildart ran for election to a full six-year term in the April 6 election. She won a two-year term as a write-in candidate in 2019.

There was one seat open on the board when George Bouche decided not to run again, and no candidate filed to appear on the ballot. The open seat was posted, and Lopez was selected by the board to fill the vacancy, and sworn in at the meeting.

Lopez is a project manager of educator effectiveness for the Chicago Public Schools. She has a bachelor’s degree from the University of Illinois in anthropology and a master’s in business administration from Northeastern Illinois University. She was recently honored by the Society of Women Engineers. She was a volunteer at the Flossmoor Public Library as a high school student.

The board also reorganized for its next term. Adrienne River was elected board president, Tim Martin is vice president, Tom Novak continues as treasurer and Gildart is secretary.

During the May 19 meeting, the board agreed to change several of its COVID-19 protocols.

The library staff will bring back a few tables on the first floor that had been removed. The library has been restricting guests to 45-minute stays, but now will allow for two-hour visits, although the 45-minute restrictions will remain in place for computer use.

Patrons are asked to continue wearing masks and follow social distancing guidelines. For those who are hesitant about coming into the building, the drive-up window is open for service.

The board will return to in-person meetings at the next meeting at 7 p.m. Wednesday, June 16.
